Back in the 90’s Edward Devera was definitely ahead of his time. He’s  also one of the few from his era that’s managed to keep it going to present day. His low-key attitude definitely translates into his skating which has always been smooth and stylish. We recently got Edward to answer a few questions about his past and present. Check it out below.

48 Blocks: You grew up in San Jose, how did you get in to skating and what do you remember from those early days?

Edward: I got into skating through my brother Richard around ‘84 or ‘85 where there were skate jams with launch ramps, parking blocks, curbs, plastic pipes on wooden blocks, quarterpipes ,wall ride ramps, etc.

48 Blocks: When did you first start coming to San Francisco to skate, do you have any good stories from Embarcadero?

Edward: The first time I skated Embarcadero was around ‘87 after the Animal Chin video came out - skating it all early, so fun. There were definite good times at Embardero. The people that would go there were from all over the world.

48 Blocks: You put out an amazing part in the first Real video - how did you hook up with them and what do you remember about filming for that?

Edward: Thanks. I got totally lucky with that part because I wasn't knowing anything that was going on then. I just skated with Salman Agah and Shawn Mandoli a bunch and hung out with those dudes  mostly so I that is how I got on.

48 Blocks: Eventually you parted ways with Real and hooked up with Mad Circle, how did that switch go down?

Edward: When I parted ways with Real I just wanted a change in the boards I was skating because they were getting really steep. So I called
Justin Girard and the team said it was cool.

48 Blocks: Let The Horns Blow is a classic video - great skating, music, and art direction. What do you remember about working with Justin Girard and Mad Circle?

Edward: Basically he would just come up with all the ideas. I would just hang out and skate!

48 Blocks: At some point you left Mad Circle and ended up on ATM - can you give us a summary of what was going on during that time?

Edward: I was living at my parents house in SJ where Falahee called me and asked to skate for ATM and it was all new people on it. I was stoked.

48 Blocks: You still ride for ATM and also work there. It seems like that company really takes care of it's riders - talk about how it's been working with them and what your role is there right now.

Edward: Yeah it’s been great the company seems to be doing well right now. I just got to get all the orders out to keep the customers stoked and skate with my friends - filming, shooting photos, etc.

48 Blocks: You're living in San Clemente - what's an average day in the life for you in 2009?

Edward: I live in San Clemente close to the beach next to the pier. Wake up, go skate, or go to work depending on whats happening that day.

48 Blocks: You're still skating a lot. Did you have any footage in that new Tiltmode video (haven't seen it yet) and can we expect any new video parts soon?

Edward: I skate so much, I sweat a lot cause I'm sressing every trick! YEAH! I'm stoked. THANKS GUYS! TMA son! I guess the ATM video when we just get really organized and hella footy.

48 Blocks: Speaking of Tiltmode, do you have any good San Jose stories?

Edward:  I guess partying with all my friends I've chilled with in San Jose. So much fun went on I can't remember any.

48 Blocks: Your skating was always ahead of it's time and you've been at it for a very long time, do you look at skating differently now than you did back in the day?

Edward: I don't think different from then because because I still skate the same way.

48 Blocks: Who are some skaters that have influenced you over the years? Who were you into when you were younger and who do you think is on point right now?

Edward: When I was young I thought the Bones Brigade was sick. There are so many good skaters, too many to mention. Black Label guys are shralping it up!

48 Blocks: I noticed that Shawn Mandoli had a trick in your Day In The Life on the ATM site - that's rad to see you guys still skating together. How often do you skate and hang out with Shawn these days?

Edward: Shawn's cool, he live's in Costa Mesa now. He's happily married also, I'm going to their reception. I skate with him once in awhile though.

48 Blocks: When you're not skating, what do you do to occupy your time?

Edward: I read constantly.

48 Blocks: Any last words that you want to say to wrap this up?

Edward: Thanks to 48 Blocks for this interview, John and everyone at ATM Skateboards, Lance at Indy, Hunter at Nike and all that skateboard. PEACE!
